Finding my village: Motherhood was never meant to feel like something you figure out alone

I’m Mackenzie, founder of Sophia Social and a mom here in Volusia County.

When I became a mom, I had something I’m incredibly grateful for: family nearby and people who loved me. I wasn’t without support.

But I started to realize that being surrounded by people and feeling connected in motherhood aren’t always the same thing.

There’s something different about being around other women who are walking in the same season you’re in. The ones who get why getting out of the house can feel like an accomplishment. Who are asking the same questions, looking for the same recommendations, and trying to make a life for their families while remembering there’s still a whole person underneath the title of “mom.”

I wanted to make connection easier to find.

Not only connection with other moms, but connection to the community around us.

The places that make life with kids easier. The trusted care and resources you want for your family. Things to do when everyone needs to get out of the house. Somewhere worth going when you finally have a sitter.

And, maybe most importantly, opportunities to spend time with other women who get it.

I wanted one place where someone was doing the work of finding those things, vetting them, keeping them current, and bringing women together around them.

So I decided to build it.

Why “Sophia”?

Sophia is the name of our first baby, who we lost during pregnancy.

Although I never had the opportunity to mother her in the way I imagined, she will always be part of the story that made me a mom for the first time.

Naming this community Sophia Social felt like a meaningful way to carry her with me into something created to care for other mothers.

What began from seasons of both loss and loneliness has grown into a vision for something full of connection, generosity, friendship, and joy. And I can’t think of a more meaningful way for her name to live on.

Our Mission

To serve God by serving moms, creating a community rooted in the kind of care reflected in Psalm 23: a place of connection and rest, trusted guidance and resources, and support that meets moms where they are.

Psalm 23 has become a picture of the kind of community Sophia Social is growing: it shows us what it looks like to care for people well: to provide, guide, stay close through difficult seasons, and create places of rest along the way.

That’s the heart we want behind how we show up for moms.

Our vision is for Sophia Social to become a community that both brings moms together and cares for them well.

Built for motherhood

Motherhood keeps changing. One year you’re looking for prenatal support. Then it’s swim lessons and toddler activities.

Eventually you’re searching for summer camps, a restaurant everyone can handle, or something you can do that has absolutely nothing to do with your kids.

Sophia Social is meant to grow through these seasons with you.

It’s why we’re thoughtful about what makes it into The Guide, why we partner with businesses we think are worth knowing, why our events range from experiences with the kids to nights that give you a reason to get the sitter.

Because being a mom is part of who you are. It doesn’t have to be the only part.

A village that reaches further

My hope is that Sophia Social makes Volusia County feel more connected, easier to navigate, and a lot more fun to experience.

That you find a place you end up loving. Try something you wouldn’t have known about otherwise. Walk into an event and recognize a face. Then, somewhere along the way, become that familiar face for someone else.

That’s the kind of community I want to build here.

And I’d love for you to be part of it.
